Born May 2, 1719 in Cecil CO, MD and died abt 1790 in Greene CO, TN Ellen Klingman Pettay Wed Oct 16 06:33:29 1996 SMILEY Andrew SMILEY moved to (what is now) Greene County, Tennessee, from Virginia during 1783-84. Is he the father of (or the same person as) Sawyers (sometimes spelled Cyrus) SMILEY, who lived in Greene County from its formation until his death in 1816? Sawyers could have been Sawyers Andrew SMILEY or Andrew Sawyers SMILEY; he is my 5g-father. This family passed the name Andrew from father to son (using it in one generation as a first name, middle name for next generation, first name in next generation--usually--but the name of Andrew SMILEY passed from father to son in each generation).

In Greene County, Tennessee, trying to prove that Andrew SMILEY is the son of is the son of Sawyers (sometimes spelled Cyrus) SMILEY, who lived in Greene County from its formation until his death in 1816. Andrew is my 4g-father. Andrew is apparently the oldest surviving son of Sawyers. Sawyers' will left his "plantation" (200-acre farm, no slaves) to Andrew, but does not specify "to my son Andrew." Genealogists tell me that, in an old will like this, we can assume that Andrew is the son of Sawyers; any other relationship would have been specified in the will. Because so many records from this period (1784-1816) were lost in fires, the only documents we have been able to find are Sawyers' will, county tax records, and the county marriage records (which give us dates, names of bride and groom and the fact that Andrew provided surity for the weddings). From this we assume Andrew is the oldest surviving son in the family.

In Greene County, Tennessee from 1783-1846 lived several generations of my ancestors. In each generation was an Andrew SMILEY. We would like to communicate with anyone who has info. about any of the persons named Andrew SMILEY. We have info. to share. Thanks!
