Former Magistrate,
Local Merchant, Dies
John Franklin Baxter, a former member of the Greene County Court and a local merchant for many years, died last night at 10:30 at his home on the Knoxville Highway at the age of 87.
The funeral will take place Sunday afternoon at three o'clock at New Bethel Church with interment in the church cemetery. The Rev. Roder Gourley and Rev. Frank Roof will officiate.
Pallbearers will be Foy Pates, James Pruitt, Elbert Pierce, C. M. Goode, Bea Swift and Walter Harmon.
Flower bearers will be the ladies of New Bethel Church and the New Bethel Home Demonstration Club.
He is survived by one son, Clarence Baxter of Greeneville; one foster daughter, Mrs. Rex Foshee of Morristown; five grandchildren, Mrs. Bill Edwards of Quonset, R. I., Harold, Coriece, John and Saundra Baxter, all of Greeneville; two foster grandchildren, Red Foshee Jr. and Gary Foshee of Morristown and one great granddaughter, Bridget Ann Edwards of R. I.
The deceased served twelve years as a member of the Greene County Court and was a Greene County merchant and poultry man for seventy-one years. He had been a member of the New Bethel Church for many years.
The body will be removed from Doughty-Stevens to the late home this afternoon at five o'clock.
