John P. Bible, 77, son of Francis H. and Mary (Behrendt) Bible, died on Thursday, April 27, 2000 after a long and courageous fight with cancer. John was born on July 28, 1922 in Foley where he spent his early years as part of a rapidly growing family. He attended school in Hinckley before moving to Pine Ctiy where he spent the remainder of his adult lift.
It was here that he met and fell in love with his sweetheart, Avis (Lee) Bible. They were married Aug. 28, 1943 and continued their courtship for 56 years.
As a young man John was employed in a variety of occupations. He also served in the United States Navy as a Seabee. He was stationed in China and the Philippines, as well as other Eastern arenas. In 1953, John began his work for Pine County, providing them with his experience and dedication for 30 years.
Never one to sit long for any reason, John was a man on the move. He enjoyed traveling with his wife and took numerous trips throughout the continental United States, Hawaii and foreigh countries as well. He was also an avid and expert gardener, providing his family and friends, as well as strangers, with bountiful harvests on an annual basis.
During John's life, he was involved in variety of activities. He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, the V.F.W. and the American Legion. He was also a member of the Pine City morning coffee clubs, where he participated enthusiastically, lending his humor and wit to the daily events. John was known for his generosity and willingness to help family and friends alike, whenever there was a need. He gave freely of his time and resources to help those who needed a kind hand.
John was preceded in death by his parents, Francis and Donald [Mary??] Bible, and his sisters, Shirley Elfstrum and Lucille Skluzacek. He is survived by his wife, Avis, his son, Dennis and his wife, Ginny, his grandchildren, Robert and Alexandra, his brothers, Robert, Kennth and LeRoy Bible, his sisters, Mildred Baker, Rita Bible, Verna Carlson and Marian Schoeberl, as well as numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
A memorial liturgical service was held for John at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, May 2, at the Swanson Funeral Chapel in Pine City. The Rev. Michael J. Lyons officiated. Glenna Reirson was the organist, and the soloist was Glenn Larsen. The Heath Perkins American Legion Post 51 and the Novak Milliren VFW Post 4258 provided Military Honors. On May 3, a private entombment was held at Lakewood Cemetery in Minneapolis. Devoted to his family and friends, free wit, caring in spirit, John will be sadly missed and warmly remembered by all.
