Roy Lewis Bible
August 2, 1904 - February 26, 1990
ROY LEWIS BIBLE was born August 2, 1904 in Welch, Oklahoma, to Lewis Montgomery and Julia (Greer) Bible.
He married Vivian Mayme Henry on December 3, 1925 in Oswego, Kansas. She preceded him in death on November 18, 1988.
Mr. Bible received his education in Welch, Oklahoma, where he attended grade and high school. He worked as a farmer and cowhand there. In 1926 they moved to the Texas Panhandle, where he worked as a cowhand and in the oil fields until 1953. They then moved to Carlton, Oregon, where he worked in the woods as a "choker setter" for the timber industry. In 1954 they moved to Scoggins Valley, near Gaston, Oregon. He worked for the Washington County Road Department until he retired in 1973.
When the Federal Government purchased most of the individual properties in Scoggins Valley and made the valley a Reservoir, they moved to Eastern Oregon in the John Day area where they lived until returning to Verboort Oregon in 1980.
Mr. Bible enjoyed hunting, fishing, fly tying, making his own fly rods, and telling stories of his youth. His favorite story was the one where he and a friend, Claude, had finished calf roping practice and were on horseback following behind some girls walking down the road - when he told Claude that he had his eye on one of the girls for some time and said "I think I will just rope her". Claude said, "you darn fool - that's my Sister, Vivian. The young Mr. Bible remarked, "I didn't know you even had a sister" - as his rope encircle her and he pulled the rope ever so gently around her waist.
He was a member of Scoggins Valley Community Church, Woodmen of the World, a lifetime member of the Moose Lodge in Dumas, Texas, and a member of the National Rifleman Association.
Survivors include his sooy Olan Bible of Forest Grove, and Sidney J.L. Bible of Salem; daughters, Sue Scrivner and Julia Koberstein both of Gaston; 10 grand children and 11 great-grandchildren.
