Greetings!
We'd hoped to get two more issues out before the end of the year, but we are obviously not going to manage that feat. It's amazing how much time is taken up by 'less important' things like everyday life! We do have some interesting news for all of you. We'd also like to welcome our new subscribers who just 'discovered' us this past summer. (and have probably been wondering when a new issue was coming out!) We also thought it might be a good idea to print the
address of the Bible Family site on the Internet. All those cousins who receive the newsletter by e-mail will probably already know it; but some of you who are not computer/Internet-oriented (and may have no interest in computers) may sometime have an opportunity to visit our site. More and more community libraries are offering free Internet access to patrons, so you never know when you might find yourselves "surfing the Net"! If you should find yourself in front of a computer with Internet access, just type the following into the appropriate place:
http://www.rootsweb.com/~bible
There you can find our Bible database listing all the Bible descendants we currently have in our files. You will also find some information on collateral lines and a listing of pages created by other Bible descendants. A word of warning, however: Much of the information found there is NOT documented, at least, not by us. Cousins send us information on their families and we include it. We have no practical way to check the accuracy of all the data. If anyone finds errors and has solid proof of the correct information, we would love to know about it.

DISCLAIMER: The accuracy of undocumented material in this publication is not assured. Undocumented material is based on the works of others passed along from generation to generation. Genealogy is not an 'exact science' per se. Due to human error, lost family records, |
unmarked graves, verbal histories, phonetic name spellings, falsification of data, the ravages of war, natural disasters, fires, and simple lack of record keeping, one has to rely oncommon sense and alternative sources to hopefully fill the voids within the family tree. ANNUAL BIBLE REUNION
TX/OK
This past summer we learned about a Bible family reunion which has been an annual affair for many years. The families involved are all descendants of John George Bible, who is descended from John and Rebecca (Coffelt) Bible, of Marion Co. TN. John George was the son of their son, Christopher Columbus. John G.'s descendants are living in TX, OK and AR..........and probably other places we don't know about yet. Even though this has traditionally been a gathering for these particular descendants, that's only because they didn't know about the rest of us! A couple of folks, who are involved with our Internet group, were able to attend this year's reunion and had a wonderful time! We were told anyone was welcome to attend, but we just didn't learn about it until after the last newsletter was sent out. This year's reunion had over 141 people attending.
This family reunion is always held the 3rd weekend in July. For a number of years it has been held at Lake Altus, OK. Friday nights are not organized as everyone is still arriving. Many families have some type of RV, but others stay in tents or in close-by motels. We're told it does get very hot and humid there. There is fishing and swimming available for those who want that type of activity. There is a playground for the kids and close by there is a place to go 4-wheelin'. Across the lake, there is a water slide, go carts, and "mountains" to climb. Saturday Night, they have a wiener roast and marshmallow roast and home-made ice cream. They also have a charity auction -- basically, attendees buy white elephant items to help pay for rent on the shelter and postage for the announcements. They sell everything from garden veggies to old pictures and copies of family histories. Just fun things. (They even have "Bible Reunion" T-shirts!)
|
Everyone is encouraged to bring items for the auction. Sunday is the big day. Everybody brings food and they eat and have the family meeting. This is when they elect officers and take up a collection if the auction did not pay for everything.
The past and current secretary is Nancy Weatherly of Amarillo, TX.
If anyone knows of other Family Reunions being organized, please let us know as far in advance as possible. We've been thinking about trying to organize a family gathering in Las Vegas, as it seems like a lot of people end up there once a year or so anyway! At this point, this is a VERY tentative idea, with no time frame. We'd like to have some feedback on it so we know if it's feasible or not.

JOH. ADAM BIBLE, Sr. - PATRIOT OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION
Many Bible descendants are aware that J. Adam Bible, *JR.* served in the American Revolution and his female descendants are eligible for membership in the Daughters of the American Revolution. However, descendants of his siblings had not been able to claim the same eligibility as he was the only one to actually serve in the military during that war. However, last March, Nedra Dickman Brill submitted a well-documented application for membership to the DAR, based on her descent from Joh. Adam Bible *SR.*'s son George and his wife Ann Penninger. Her application was officially accepted this past Summer.
You may be wondering how this is possible. Well, Adam Bible, SR. is recognized as a Patriot of the Revolution. This recognition is |

|
based on his providing one 300-pound bullock to feed the local militia in the County of Rockingham, VA, during the Revolution. This Patriot recognition entitles any of his female descendants to membership in the
DAR, provided they can satisfactorily document
each generation of that descent. Male descendants would be equally eligible for membership in the Sons of the American Revolution, with equal documentation.
The DAR was provided with several variations on the Patriot's name, as found in different documents. The DAR chose to use the name "Joh. Adam" Bible, the given name found in the baptismal records from Alsace, as the official name of this Patriot in their records.
Therefore, using this form of his name in any future applications is recommended, as doing so will simplify the process; particularly if anyone is applying as a descendant of George. At this time, only George is recognized by the DAR as a PROVEN child of Joh. Adam Bible and Eva because only his connection had to be proven for this application. It would therefore be necessary for descendants of other children to prove their ancestor was, in fact, a child of Adam Sr. and Eva.

Research Tip: Documentation
***************************
Many family historians overlook the importance of documenting and organizing what they have found. Then, as discoveries become more difficult, With
limited time and money, a little effort spent documenting and organizing the results of research pays large rewards.
|
What to Document?
Successful family historians begin with what they know and work backwards in time to the
unknown. As work begins on a line, information piles up from censuses, county histories, the
memories of relatives, printed genealogies, and many other sources. Each of those "clues" are
important to the researcher to document. Is that date on the tombstone accurate? How about
the one in the census record or the family Bible? What about the consent given by parents on a
marriage record? What do you do when the information in one source doesn't agree with
another? Without keeping track of where each clue was found, a researcher will forget, and will eventually look at the same information again.
A research record for a family can be as simple as a list of the sources consulted, with the names of the libraries and call numbers for books and microfilms. Both positive and negative results should be noted. For example, "MHS, F612.C29 C384 1996 'Chanhassen: Centennial,' no references to family; copied Mudcura info." By reviewing the research record before heading to the library, you can eliminate the need to check that reference again.
Proof
Sorting out your "Adam Bible" from all the others requires proof; evidence as contemporary with the event as possible. Much has been written on what constitutes "proof," and few would argue that "proof" doesn't belong on the family group and pedigree charts, whether they are kept on paper only or through a computer software program. What you accept for proof before moving on to your next research problem should be cited on your charts and on what you take with you on your research trips.
A research record for an individual can be a simple checklist, listing the facts and proofs of those facts. This shows, in one place, what research still needs to be done. Have you located all the possible governmental records (vital statistics, probate, tax assessments, school, etc.)? |

|

Is census work complete? Any published genealogies? Such a checklist not only reveals the gaps in research, it also provides the citations you need to
include that individual in your family history.
If you have no "paper" documentation, and the information you have is from a relative or an unpublished family record or notes; then you should indicate which person gave you the information. That way, readers can evaluate the potential validity of the information and possibly even contact that person for further information.

FAMILY TIDBITS
***********************************
Boyd D. Bible, grandson of Carl Balch Bible, sent in this article based on a history his grandfather wrote.
Thomas LaFayette Bible, father of Carl Balch Bible, was born September 18, 1857, in Rader's, TN. Rader's was close to Greenville, but no longer is there a town in Tennessee with that name. There are many in that area with the Rader surname, however. Thomas was the 3rd son of John Adam and Leannah KNIPP Bible. He was eight years old at the close of the Civil War, but did remember the hardships his family endured. Thomas remembered hiding out in the ditches and fields during the day while the battle was going on, and returning in the evening after the battle had ended for the day.
All of the fighting was done during the day and when night came the soldiers would return home and sleep. The bullets and cannonballs would sometimes hit the sides of houses and buildings. There is a church in Greeneville to this day that has a cannonball lodged in its outside wall. I have seen this in a picture. Thomas told Carl that one of the fortunes of war was to see the soldiers butcher one of your pigs or cows or chickens and use your pots and kettles to cook it in and never offer a morsel of it. Carl had asked |
Thomas which side did this and Thomas said that both sides were alike. Finally, the battle ground moved away from their home. After that, Thomas and his brothers found about a dozen rifles and hid them out in their barn. They later had to give them up as someone reported the guns.
The brothers and sisters of Thomas LaFayette Bible were Susan E. Bible, Andrew Bible, Francis Marion Bible, Adam M. Bible, Noah Bible, and Sarah Bible. Carl had Francis Marion recorded as Marion, so he probably was called by that name. Carl also listed one of the brothers as Minnis, so that could have been the middle name of Adam. There are also records of other Minnis Bibles that have been found.
Toms Carl wrote attended a one room schoolhouse that included "beginners" through the eighth grade. All were taught by one teacher. They studied aloud and it was quite a noisy place. If a pupil wasn't studying aloud or making any noise, the teacher would rap their knuckles with a ruler. They believed in using switches and didn't hesitate to use them if the occasion needed it. All the noise supposedly taught the students to concentrate. An eighth grade education was considered a good education in those days. Emphasis was placed on Reading, Writing (Penmanship), and Arithmetic.
Thomas L. Bible was a tall man, about 6'2" and about 225 lbs. He had blue eyes, a "reclining" (receding) hair line. He was bald on the top of his head and in front. He also wore glasses to read. His word was as good as his bond. He was honest in all his dealings. As a young man he was a Christian, did not cuss, and never used whiskey or tobacco in any form. His father, John Adam Bible, chewed and smoked very much.
Thomas Lafayette Bible died on 26 Oct 1926, of stomach cancer.

IF
If you could see your ancestors,
all standing in a row.
There might be some of them, perhaps,
You wouldn't care to know.
But there's another question
Which requires a different view.
If you could meet your ancestors,
Would they be proud of you?

An Author in the Family
We recently learned that Donahue Bible has written a story about the Bridge Burners in Greene County, TN, early in the Civil War. The story is called "Shattered Like Earthen Vessels" and can be found in the December issue of Civil War Times magazine. Someone who is not a Bible descendant read it, told us about it, and said the article was very interesting. Congratulations, Donahue!

????????QUERIES????????
My grandmother Hazel Eileen Martin is the
daughter of Gladys Elizabeth Bible, born 3-21-1902, one sister, Marguerite Bible, born 2-4-1899, Two brothers Charles Bible born 2-4-1896, and Merle Bible born 12-18-1904. Mother was Hattie Mae King who married Irwin Lewis Bible, born 1865. I have all this information from my great aunt in a letter to a cousin of mine(Martin). I have just begun on this genealogy so any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. I know I have to start with some research in Ohio. My greatgrandmother Gladys Bible died in Dayton, Ohio in 1982? I think. She was born in Connersville, Indiana per my grandfather Cummings, That is all I know at the moment. I would love to know who Irwin Lewis Bible's parents were. and I would be happy to share any information I have. Thanks,

Hi. My name is Janet Raychouni and I am looking for any information on the Bible line of my family. My great-grandmothers name was Grace Love Bible, b. March 1892, m. 1908, d. June 23, 1988. She raised a family in Greene Co. Tennessee. I am not sure of her parents name or her place of
birth but I am assuming it is Greene Co. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

First Generation in America
If we were proceeding in strict chronological order of the children of Joh. Adam Biebel, the following chart would be for Joh. Christian. There has been so much research done on his family, and most of his descendants already appear to have the data on his children. So we have decided to skip him for now. The only real question about his family appears to be that of determining which wife is the mother of which children. If anyone has solid proof of the maternity of any of the children, we would love to know about it.
The next child, chronologically, would probably be Eva Catherine. Unfortunately, we know nothing about her other than her christening date. We have heard "rumors" that she may have married a John FULK, but we haven't found any evidence to prove this.
So, we are continuing our series of Family Group Reports with the family of Joh. Adam Jr., who is next in line. As usual, any supported corrections are very welcome!

68-Children "proven" by deeds (sons) marriage bonds (daus.) and death records of Elizabeth, dau. of Adam Jr. i.e.:
Burnt Deed Book 12, p. 145 (DB 12-145) 1835 - Phillip & Polly bible sold their share of Adam Bible's land to John Bible.
Burnt DB 16-406, 1843, shows that John, Phillip & J(acob?) Bible were sons and heirs of John Adam Bible [Jr.].
Burnt DB 18-330, 1845 shows John Bible & Polly his wife, selling land from the estate of John Adam Bible in Brock's Gap to Daniel Fulk.
|
Burnt DB 18-370, 1845, shows George Bible & Elizabeth his wife, of Williams Co., OH, selling land, etc. to Daniel Fulk. They owned 1/10th of Adam's land.
Burnt DB 19-36, 1846, shows Rodecap and Shoemaker selling land, etc. to Daniel Fulk. They had gotten the land from Joseph & Susannah Turner and Christian Bible.
Burnt DB 25-52, 1853, shows Adam Bible & Sarah his wife, of Coshocton Co., OH, selling land to Daniel Fulk. They owned 1/9.
Adam Bible [Jr.] was consistently referred to as "John Adam" in all the deeds.
Research:
24 -Much of the information about Adam comes from his military file resulting from his service in the American Revolutionary War. He enlisted 2 Feb 1776 for two years and served as a Private until 8 Feb. 1778 in Captain John Gratton's Company of the 8th Virginia Regiment commanded by Colonel Mullenberg. Adam fought in the battles of Brandywine and Germantown and according to his wife's affidavit he marched as far south as Charleston, South Carolina. Adam was discharged from the army at Valley Forge on February 8, 1778.
1784 - resided in Rockingham County, VA, list of John Fitzwater, with 3 "white souls," 1 dwelling and 1 other building.
1788 - had 1 tithable [himself] and 3 horses, per Wayland, "Virginia Valley Records," page 108. This list is based upon 1787 tithables and horses and has NOTHING to do with the Revolutionary War. Military officers were political appointments and they were in charge of a district. The citizens and horses were enumerated so that potential resources for the local militia could be determined, as well as assess taxes.
In 1788 Adam was listed with one tithable and three horses. In 1788 he was living in Captain John Ruddell's Company number 11 and in 1789 he was living there in Military District Number 7 with 113 acres of land5
|
 |
