VOLUME I, Issue 1 June/July/August 1996

IT'S A SUCCESS!!

Yep, our little newsletter's first issue turned
out to be a resounding success!! To give you a little hint on how we sent out the first issue. We did a search on the internet for people with the surname of BIBLE and sent all of them one, response -- I figure about 10% not bad for a "mass" mailing to an unknown entity. Then along the way we have gathered names and addresses from different sources and sent them through the mail. Response -- ah, just so so, but feel that it is harder for people to respond this way than sending a message through the internet. Several people who were sent newsletters through the post office responded with their e-mail addresses. The next batch of mailings came through the people who happened across my webpage inquiring about any information that I might have on a particular BIBLE or if I am researching a particular line. They were sent a copy of the newsletter, and most, if not all responded back indicating they would like to continue receiving it. We have over 50 people wantingto continue receiving The Family Bible, which we believe is fantastic for a new publication !!

WELCOME ONE!!
WELCOME ALL !!

News, Reviews and other
Tidbits of info:

As some of you know, we (the co-editors) have amassed a huge amount of information on the early Bible family in America, thanks to the generosity of others. However, since the majority of information is undocumented and sometimes contradictory, we want to verify as much of the data as possible. We started with some of the documentation we did receive. Bridgett went looking for further information on the Bible baptisms at the New Hanover Lutheran Church in Montgomery Co., PA and Terri looked for confirmation of the European origins of our immigrant ancestor, Hans Adam Biebel. We were also attempting to find more information about his wife, whom records we had listed as one "Eve Ryan", although no one seemed confident about that. We were independently introduced to a new source of information by people who were professionals in German immigrant genealogy. We submit this information to you now .

Annette K. Burgert is a highly qualified and respected genealogist whose bailiwick is Western European Emigration and is experienced at deciphering old handwriting and documents. She has researched and written several books regarding this subject. One of these books, Eighteenth Century Emigrants from the Northern Alsace to America, states the following:

A John Adam Biebel from Goersdorf (a little town outside of Woerth) arrived aboard the Sandwich in 1750. The European records from the Preuschdorf Lutheran KB (Church records) indicate that a Georg Bibel, son of Mathis Bibel, citizen at Goersdorf, m. 11 May 1723 Maria Eva, daughter of Christoph Burckhardt, citizen and mastersmith and Gerichtsschoffen (mayor) at Presuschdorf. Their son was: John Adam b. 2 Apr 1728.

Adam Biebel, single son of Hans Georg
Biebel, m. 19 Nov 1748 at Gorschdorff,

Maria Eva Muller, eldest daughter of Otto Philipp Muller, the miller at the Gorschdorffer Mill. They had a son, b. 22 Apr 1749, named Johann Georg who died the same year. Ms. Burgert states: "Hans Adam Biebel's signature in the marriage record and baptism record in this KB matches his signature on the passenger list from the Sandwich."

In the New Hanover Lutheran Church KB, Montgomery CO, PA., It shows that Adam Biebel and wife Eva had the following children:

  • Johan Christian b. 7 Jan 1752, bpt 9 Feb 1752
Sponsors: Christian Kurtz and Elisabeth Borchart

  • Eva Catharina b. 31 Oct 1756, bpt 28 Nov 1756
Sponsors: Jacob Mayer and Eva Krebs

NOTE:   These are the only two for whom we have found documentary proof of birth.

If you find yourself wondering why this information refers to "Johann Adam" not "Hans Adam", it is because both are the same name. The first names are interchangeable in German and both translate as "John". We have also learned that Germans in that time period frequently had multiple Christian names. the majority of males were Johann and the majority of females were Maria, but they rarely were called by those first names. We believe that Hansi's (our affectionate nickname for him) wife's full name was "Maria Eva Margaretha", but we have not yet been able to prove it.

We welcome your comments and suggestions.

Donahue Bible sent us this tidbit of interesting news:

"The Conestoga wagon which was used by Philip Bible in traveling from Rockingham County, Virginia, to Greene County, is now

on display at the DAVY CROCKETT TAVERN, in Morristown, Tennessee. It is a State Historical site."

Please send us your interesting facts that you have run across in your research to be printed in the next issue. Deadline for submissions Aug 1, 1996.

Birth Dates

An idea I (Bridgett) had was to put into each issue the birth dates of the Bible clan that would occur during the 3/4 month period this newsletter covers. I have amassed well over 800 names pertaining to Bible in my database, and have retrieved them for this purpose. These will be dates of those that are with us and those that are watching over us. This issue will cover June through August (of the one's I know about). If you have any to submit for September through November, please have them in before August 1, 1996, thanks !
