1996 was an exciting year for Biebel/Bible Researchers. Last year brought many of us together for the first time, we've seen new and exciting evidence, and each separate Bible family (Johan Adam's, Johan Daniel's and the Irish groups) learn of each other's family. We can not speak for Daniel's descendant's nor the descendant's of the emigrants from Ireland -- but for the longest time the descendant's from Adam's family tended to feel as every Bible in America was from our little emigrant and his wife, who we found was not Irish after all. It was a learning experience indeed to find these other separate families and are delight that many wished to receive our newsletter and feel kin to us. We do not wish to leave them out of our newsletter, but as we do not know much about their line we are hoping they will contribute a line or two or even enough for a column of their own.

The co-editors wish to express their appreciation to those of you who receive the newsletter through US Mail, and have sent in donations to keep this newsletter coming in that manner. They were quite a surprise to both of us, and made us feel like we were creating something that made an impression on others, and helped in your research also. We also appreciate the friendly notes and family information sent to us.

Our plans for future issues are still up in the air. We still intend to publish a newsletter, but we feel you, the readers and cousins, might have some ideas about what you would like
to see in it. Would you like just the reporting of research findings? Would you like a newsletter that contained news about the "now" generation, with marriages, births, graduations and deaths? Your ideas will be very much appreciated.

BACK TO SQUARE ONE !!!

The baptismal record from New Hanover Church which has been used as documentation of the birth of either Johann Adam (John) or Johann *Adam*, Jr. was actually published under the name of "Johann Adam BICKEL". It has been assumed all these years that someone misread the entry when the book was printed and the name was supposed to be BIEBEL, not BICKEL. Some people do have Adam Jr.'s birth date as 1758, although no proof has been found for this date either.

However, Nedra Dickman Brill, a descendant of George (son of Hans Adam) and also a Certified Genealogist, found in her National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution that book:

A membership application filed with the DAR lists Adam Bickel, born 16 July 1754 , died 1798, married Mary Hughes. This person served in the Revolution from Pennsylvania. Documentation was provided with the application.

So, get out your erasers and remove that date from your records until someone does more research. A new, or rather a renewed project! Any takers?

German naming practices. Knowing how the people of German descent named their children can help you in your research. I found the below information on the internet and thought many of you may not know this and would help you in your research -- not only our BIBLE line but also any other surnames of families you are currently researching that may have been from Germany.

It was a common practice in some 18th Century German families to name the first born son after the child's paternal grandfather and the second born son after the maternal grandfather. Here are two more detailed naming patterns practiced by some families.

Pattern A

1st son after the father's father
2nd son after the mother's father
3rd son after the father
4th son after the husband's father's father
5th son after the wife's father's father
6th son after the husband's mother's
father
7th son after the wife's mother's father

1st daughter after the wife's mother
2nd daughter after the husband's mother
3rd daughter after the mother
4th daughter after the father's father's
mother
5th daughter after the mother's father's
mother
6th daughter after the father's mother's
mother
7th daughter after the mother's mother's
mother

Page 3

Pattern B

The pattern B for the sons is the same as
the above but this pattern for daughters was different:

1st daughter after the father's mother
2nd daughter after the mother's mother
3rd daughter after the mother
4th daughter after the mother's father's
mother
5th daughter after the father's father's
mother

Pattern C

1st son after the father's father
2nd son after the mother's father
3rd son after the father's oldest brother
4th son after the father

1st daughter after the father's mother
2nd daughter after the mother's mother
3rd daughter after the mother's oldest
sister
4th daughter after the mother

Whenever a duplicate name occurred in these two patterns, the next name in the series was used. If a child died in infancy the name was often reused for the next child of the same gender.

If you are lucky enough to find a family with a lot of children, who strictly followed one of these naming patterns, then it may give you useful clues to determining the possible names
of family members in earlier generations.

DOCUMENTATION

We are currently trying to get as much documentation of the first 3 or 4 generations of the Johan (Hans) Adam Biebel line as we can gather. If you have any DOCUMENTED evidence on your lineage (wills, deeds, marriage bonds/certificates, death certificates) we would appreciate a copy of this documentation and/or of any citations from published works which support your data.

Tidbits from subscribers:

#1 Here is an interesting tidbit from one of Daniel Biebel's descendants regarding the Civil War and the Bible's:

"Here are some interesting facts my grand- father turned up:

"At the Battle of Chancellorsville, two first cousins, both named William Bible, died fighting for the North. They were both grandchildren of Johannes Biebel (b. 1770/d. 1821). These two were: Lieut. William Bible of Company C of the PA 148th regiment and Private William Bible of Company D of the same regiment. In the "Story of Our Regiment: The Pennsylvania 148th Volunteers", these two are mentioned along with Daniel P. Bible (brother of Lieut. William) who fought for the 51st PA Volunteer regiment, and Col. John Bible of Chattanooga TN fighting for the Confederacy and described as a "scion of the Virginia branch" of the Bible family."

I thought that this was an interesting note, that these two men fought each other, and now we are trying to find information about them.

George Bible s/o Adam, Jr:

Submitted by Jacque Whetro

#2 Our George Bible was possibly the first settler in Superior Township, Williams County (OH) ca 1834. Another family disputes it but there is no way to say which came first, but our George gets the credit in the history books. He was a great marksman and one time bet a neighbor he could kill the most deer in a two month period. He won but was disappointed that he had only 99 and couldn't make it an even 100 when the time was up. He is credited with naming our township and gave it the name Superior as he believed it to be superior to all others around.

George & Elizabeth had 9 children - Adam, Charles, Magdalena, Katherine, George W, Elizabeth, Margaret "Peggy", Lovis and Mary.

I descend through the oldest child, Adam Bible who was known as Daddy Bible.

George lived in Tuscarawas, Cochoston and Muskingum Counties in OH (I believe) before coming to Williams County. None of the children were born in Williams County but all came here to live.

Daddy Bible had 7 children and his sister Lovis, who married William Gaskill, had 10 children and the others a couple so there are many descendants yet around Williams County. Daddy Bible was the only one of the Bible sons to have descendants to carry on the Bible name of which there is at least 1 George Bible, a 5th generation, still living in Williams County OH.

Do any of you have any interesting tidbits of news or anecdotes regarding this surname that you would like to pass on?

Announcing a new publication regarding the (Hans Adam) BIEBEL/BIBLE family !!

THE QUEST FOR THE REAL HANS ADAM BIEBEL

Compiled
by
DONAHUE BIBLE

Donahue sent Bridgett a pre-publication copy of this booklet he is publishing. This booklet includes correspondence between Donahue and Bridgett, maps of the area of Germany and Northern Alsace (to show how close the two Adam Biebel's in question lived to each other), copy of marriage record received from the Archives in Strasbourg showing signature of Hans Adam Biebel with copy of signature from the ship's log, pictures of the Villages of Preuschdorf and Goersdorf (black & white), Donahue's correspondence with the Archives in Strasbourg, and a description of the coat of arms that was issued to a Biebel Von Biebelheim in 1694.

Donahue states that he will place these booklets in several local libraries, and "sell at cost to those interested persons in the family, who might want one." He indicates that he might publish the booklet with color photographs, but this would probably sell for around the $25 to $30 range due to the color.

If interested in obtaining one of these booklets, please contact one of the co-editors of this newsletter indicating which type of copy you would like to receive, and we will pass this information onto Donahue so he can have an idea as to how many of these booklets to have printed.

FAMILY FICTION?

In their family histories, a lot of Bible family members have a charming story about "Eve (Ryan) and the Indians". Since we now know that Johann (Hans) Adam Bible's wife was NOT Eve Ryan, we'd like to see an end to this story. It is a common story found in many, many non-Bible family histories, with the heroine's name changed to fit the family. In our case, we think we have discovered how this story may have been added to the Bible histories.

A Coffelt researcher named Robert K. Coffelt wrote a book called the "Coffelt History Notebook" . He spent years researching and documenting Coffelts and Bibles, among others who married into the Coffelt family. According to him, Ellen/Eleanor Ryan, daughter of Edward Ryan, married Phillip Coffelt. Their daughter Rebecca married John Bible. Phillip Coffelt's family was in Greene Co. TN. The Coffelt family has the identical story about "Eve and the Indians", except the heroine is *Ellen* Ryan!
So, it looks like some descendent of John and Rebecca heard stories about grandmothers and got Eve and Ellen mixed up together. Easy to do when so little was known about Eve. We still can't figure out where she went after Hans Adam died and have found scarcely any mention of her in this country.
*********************

Another fiction appears to be the existence of a gravestone with the dates of Eve Bible. So far, no one now living has found this mythical stone. There are only stories of "someone who told someone who told someone else". There is apparently an unreadable stone in the appropriate cemetery, but it appears to have been unreadable for many, many years.
